少し変わり者のBillyは、エディンバラ公園で人を殺したと告白します。しかしInspectorのLoganとSergeantのGrantは彼を信じません。Billyはこれまで何度も虚偽の犯罪報告をしてきました。しかし、若い女性がその公園で死体となって発見されました。そしてすぐにまた他の殺人が起きます。まさか本当にBillyが？

・I’d be very surprised if it was Billy.
これは2nd conditionalといわれる英文法です。
“If + past + “would do” = only imagining.
「私はすごく驚くだろう、もしそれがBillyだったら。」というニュアンスです。本来は起こりえないことに対して使われる仮定法構文です。

相手の質問に対して、持ち合わせている情報から判断して答えがNoとなった場合の表現です。この物語では一貫して使われていました。
